Then we will travel for four hours through fabulous landscapes and mountain valleys, passing through Paucartambo (the folk capital of Cusco) that has beautiful spanish colonial architecture and an old stone bridge. After, we go to the Acjanaco lookout at 4,000 masl (13,123 ft) for an exceptional view over the cloud forest and lowlands. This is the entry point to the Manu National Park. From here we travel down through the pristine cloud forest that feeds the unique local flora. The landscape is stunning: we will pass by many waterfalls, panoramic views of the valley and the dense vegetation of the cloud forest: mosses, lichens, orchids and birds unique to this part of the world. The cock of the rock, trogons, tangaras; capuchin monkeys and woolly monkeys can also be seen. We will spend the night in the rustic and cozy Bamboo Lodge.
We will start the day with a guided tour of the lodge, with an emphasis on local medicinal plants (such as ayahuasca, the sacred plant of shamans), fruit trees of the Peruvian amazon,
and coca plantation. Later we will visit the animal rescue center (donation only) for one hour. Once we have passed the fastest part of the river, we will take our lunch and at the same time enjoy the fantastic views before begin our trek through an impressive walk full of wildlife to Machuwasi Lagoon. Along the way there are great opportunities to watch birds and wildlife that live in the lagoon like alligators, the prehistoric Hoazin bird (Opisthocomus hoazin), capybara and other aquatic species. On the way back have your cameras ready, cause the placid water is similar to the mirror and we will meet many birds, insects and some monkeys in this secluded lake. A night walk is offered in search of spiders, amphibians, insects and reptiles. We will spend the night at Bamboo Lodge.
Early in the morning, we will take our truck for an hour to Atalaya and board our boat to visit the nearby parrot clay lick. If weather conditions allow, we'll have an unforgettable show of parakeets, parrots, and (hopefully) macaw couples that eat the mineral-rich clay they use to help supplement their diet and improve their digestion. It is a truly vibrant colorful site.
