CITY TOUR IN CUSCO

Tuesday, 16 August, 2022 | Featured Tour | 0 Comentarios

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco

1.- The Cathedral of Cusco: We start the excursion visiting the Cathedral of Cusco, the church of the Holy Famiy, and the church of Triumph

2.- The Qoricancha: Then we visit the temple of the Qoricancha, the highest expression of Inca architecture and engineering. The Temple of the Sun or Qoricancha, is also currently the Convent of Santo Domingo.

3.-Sacsayhuaman: The impressive fortress of Sacsayhuaman is strategically built, in the top of the hill, from where all the city of Cusco is appreciated. It is famous for its huge carved stones, some of them are 9 meters or 30 feet tall and weigh more than 350 tons.

4.- Qenqo: Located four kilometers northeast of the city of Cusco, it has the archaeological groups of Q’enqo Grande and Q´enqo Chico. Etymologically, it means labyrinth or zigzag, it has a purely religious function, outside we can find a semi-circular amphitheater with trapezoidal niches and a monolith that simulates being a puma, which is approximately 6 m/ 20 ft.

5.- Puka pukara: Puka pukara means «red fortress», because the calcareous stones they use for it is built have acquired the reddish coloration of the terrain, very abundant in iron. It is alleged that it had the function of guarding Tambomach’ay, an important palace in the Inca times. But due to its architectural disposition and the existence of fountains, aqueducts and multiple enclosures, we consider like a "tambo", a resting place, a collective hostel that offered lodging and food to travelers, as well as to the entourage that had to accompany the Inca in his retreat in Tambomachay.

6.- Tambomachay: Tambomachay, is located about 8 kms. North of Cusco and very close to the Puka Pukara ruins, it is an archaeological site that was dedicated to the worship of water and so that the head of the Inca Empire could rest. This place is also called Baños del Inca. It consists of a series of aqueducts, channels and several waterfalls that run through the rocks. The surprising thing about this is that, from a main waterfall, the Incas created 2 secondary waterfalls, which are exactly the same. That is, if one places two empty bottles, one in each side, the two are filled at the same time
